The P.L.A.Y. Project Workshop Level 1: A Journey of Hope

We recently purchased the newly released P.L.A.Y. Project CD-ROM, compiled by Dr. Richard Solomon of the University of Michigan. Those parents looking for a enjoyable course on the theory and practice of Floortime will find much to like about this title, which despite some bugs and […]

The morbid side of fatherhood.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

I watched approximately the first fifteen seconds of an Oprah segment the other day about an entire family that had been murdered. I have no idea who the perpetrator was, or any details of this horrendous crime. As soon as the picture of happy children (coupled with a layover track of ominous music) hit the […]

WWGD?

Sunday, April 25th, 2004

I recently read a post on one the Yahoo autism boards I frequent, where one of its denizens wrote an article about having noticed some frighteningly familiar behavior in a child while shopping at the mall. Her conundrum: “knowing what I know about what these behaviors could mean, should I approach the mother or not?”

The workshop that wasn’t.

Saturday, April 24th, 2004

Here’s a Saturday post to make up for the one missed yesterday. Of course, we were supposed to be at the PLAY Project Level 1 workshop with Dr. Solomon today, but it got cancelled. Yesterday.

The ABCs of ABA

Thursday, April 22nd, 2004

I tuned in because, in the promo, they spoke of the “controversial new treatment” the couple sought in trying to heal […]

Rubén is now involved with a progressive listening therapy program called VitalLinks, where he listens to strategically altered CDs on high-fidelity headphones. These alterations cause the muscles in the ear to function differently than they would normally. He’s been on it for a little more than a week now.

I have absolutely no idea whether this […]

Rubén’s genes and my fears.

Does Rubén = young Daniel?

Theories abound as to what causes ASD in small children. The more common ones include mercury poisoning, vaccines (especially the MMR), and the consumption of certain medications during pregnancy. Of course, a large role is played by genetics.

This got me to thinking about how all too familiar Rubén’s characteristics are to […]

Our brand spanking new speech therapist.

Monday, April 19th, 2004

We started sessions with a new speech therapist today, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am.

I should probably backtrack for a minute and talk about our speech therapy experiences since moving back to this country…

We initially went to a therapist who came highly recommended by a family friend. We clashed with the woman […]
