Words out of the woodwork.

The words have been piling up around here. The other night, María José and I finally made it out to relax a little. The original plan was to rent a movie, but we ended up in our favorite restaurant (well, our favorite in Jackson, anyway), enjoying a few hors d’oeurves and listening to a gawd-awful soul singer, someone who spent WAAAY too much time in his youth listening to James Brown. He had none of the talent, but he was fun to watch anyway because he was just so into what he was doing. But I digress…

We ask one of the busboys for a pen and a pad of paper, and begin jotting down the words we’d heard Rubén say. Including numbers, the current total stands right around 50. I’m flabbergasted.

Not that chelation has been all sunshine and daffodils for us. We’ve really had to monitor the dose, because sometimes that old aggression will rear its homely head (usually on a speech therapy day, too — ugh). He’s been a bit stimmier as well, and occasionally disconnected. But the improvements in cognition and the words words words keep us going. I’m encouraged.

Hi Dan! This site is so impressive! I’ve been here a few times, but am not big on posting things! I definately wanted to say hello before you head back to Spain. I think that’s coming up soon? Such a cliche’, but it’s true, time really does go by so fast. You and your family are truly amazing. I enjoy reading your updates. Your persistance, encouragement and commitment to helping your son thrive is wonderful. His pics are a highlight, he is quite adorable! Many Blessings! Jen Michael

Soon you will look back on how little he spoke and wish for just one silent day! He will be a jabberjaw before you know it…and like all children, I will probably try to teach him to say words just because they sound funny coming from a kid and they have no idea what they are saying. Ever hear a 3 year old try to say methamphetamine? Twisted, yes, but oh so funny!
